A family Christmas, too much food and a whole lot of fun #LittleLoves

I’ve been worrying all week that I’ll forget to write this post, this weird time between Christmas and New Year means I’m so lost with the days. I’m in a mince pie, crisp and general food haze! I hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas week, here’s a little about mine.

  read

I’ve finally managed to scrape some time together to finished Me After You. It was just what I hoped it would be, an easy read and an insight into Lou’s life in the wake of the loss of Will. While it might never get made into a film or win any awards I really enjoyed it, in fact it felt like spending time with an old friend and having a catch up. I do hope that this isn’t the last we hear of her.

When doing a pre-Christmas clear out and dropping things off at a charity shop I spotted one of my favourite books, The Night Circus. I read this particular book not long after having E and I was mesmerised by it, it fast became one of my favourite books. The copy I had was from our library so of course when I saw it on the shelf in that charity shop I just had to buy it.

I’m only a little way in but already I’m swept up in the intrigue and magic of it all over again.

watched

On Christmas Eve Eve the girls and I went to see the much anticipated, Moana. E in particular had been desperate to see it after watching endless videos about it on US youtube channels. We all loved it, just as much as we expected too. The girls talked about how good it was to see a film that didn’t involve a love story in the traditional sense (I know, I’ve raised them well..! 😉 )

Of course it was a joy to watch my two opening their presents on Christmas Day. I don’t have any photos to share as I wanted to keep the day just for us and give the girls a break from my endless photo taking! They both got new bikes, with E being so excited with her yellow bike. All she wanted was a yellow bike and could we find one, no we could not! Then we had a brain wave, N had outgrown her bike and it was still in fantastic condition so we stripped it down and got it resprayed. We then bought new hand grips and accessories, put it back together and then got it safety checked at Halfords. I think it looks fantastic, and neither girl has a clue that it’s N’s old one.

Television wise we haven’t really watched much, of course the girls enjoyed Going On A Bear Hunt, and Revolting Rhymes  as well as a few films, but that’s about it really.

 CHRISTMAS DINNER!

I cooked a ham for the first time, using a Nigella recipe, nothing like making easy on myself, eh? It was presoaked and cooked and then on the day I glazed it and cooked it in the oven. I’m not a huge ham fan, but oh boy, it was yummy! Of course we had parsnips cooked in maple syrup and my Christmas dinner staple, brussel sprouts with pancetta.

wore

A couple of weeks before Christmas I wandered past the Benefit counter in Debenhams while doing Christmas shopping and ended up chatting about eye brows with one of the girls working there. I’m a sucker for new brow products so loved being shown all the Benefit ones. The mister had been asking what I wanted for Christmas so while I was there I got her to show me, bronzers, concealers, highlighters the lot! She tried them on me and we took photos of the products I liked as we went along. I sent the mister everything to give him some ideas and of course told him the name of the girl that had helped me so that she’d get the commission if he bought any of it.

You can imagine my delight when I opened my present on Christmas Day and found that he’d treated me to all of it! I bet Ellie, the shop assistant was pleased too!

I’ve done very little sales shopping apart from a new Boden coat for N, I did bag a few things from ASOS though and can’t wait to try them.

I’ve come across some fantastic music this year through Spotify, here’s a playlist with a lot of my favourites.

Next year I hope to go to more gigs, live music is something I definitely miss from my pre-children days.

I have had zero time for reading this week and instead have been running around chasing my tale trying to get everything ready for Christmas. Who knew that being a mum at this time of year could be so stressful?!

Have you watched The OA on Netflix yet?

It is completely mind boggling and even though I’m a few episodes in I still haven’t really got the foggiest idea of where it’s going but I genuinely don’t care. I’m glued to it and enjoying the ride.

I tackled the massive pile of presents on Wednesday and got them all wrapped. Phew. Of course I needed something festive on in the background so I went with Love Actually. Now, I’ll admit I’ve been feeling rather emotional and overwhelmed with everything so in hindsight this choice may not have been the best. I ended up blubbing my way through all of it. I’ve seen it a million times so you’d think it wouldn’t get me any more, but that scene where Emma Thomson’s character gets the Joni Mitchell CD. Man. It gets me every time.

I picked up some gingerbread house kits on my mammoth Christmas food shop, so after picking up the girls from school at midday they got stuck in putting them together.

It was my in laws’ 40th wedding anniversary last weekend so we ventured down south after school on Friday for some family celebrations. We had a fun day on the Saturday jam packed with activities and on Sunday we gathered for a meal and afternoon at the beautiful New Park Manor Hotel in the New Forest.

We had a photographer capturing the time we had there so by the time I grabbed my two for a photo they were rather fed up of cameras, hence the strained and uncomfortable expressions!

Outfit details – dresses, matching headbands and N’s shoes are all from Next, E’s shoes are Nutmeg, Morrisons

.heard

I’m sure I won’t be alone in sharing that I’ve heard a whole lot of Christmas songs this week! I’ve decided too share one of my favourite carols, O Holy Night.

This rendition is by Kings College, Cambridge. I have such strong memories of seeing my mum in our kitchen on Christmas Eve preparing for the next day while listening to this on the radio. Every year she looked forward to hearing the carols from Kings. I think it’s a little tradition I’ll be carrying on, after all I’ll have lots to get ready so why not enjoy some beautiful festive music while I’m busy.

A Wriggly Nativity, mince pies and The XX #LittleLoves

What a funny old week. I spent Friday evening and night looking after a very poorly E. She’d picked up that horrific sickness bug from somewhere. The mister missed it all as he was out in Manchester with friends, the lucky thing! Thankfully it was just a 24 hour thing and she was fine for school on Monday. I’ve been packing in as much work as possible into this week before the Christmas break. Of course I’ve been juggling that with getting presents and planning our Christmas. I stupidly tried to book a slot for our Christmas food delivery but found out I’m way too late and there are no slots anywhere! Oops. Anyway, enough of that, here are the little things that have made my week special.

  read

I’m still enjoying slowly reading Me After You, I spent some time over the weekend dipping into it while looking after a poorly E.

Molly –

I really enjoyed this post by Molly over at Mother’s Always Right – Christmas with kids, perfection is in the imperfections – and could not agree more with Molly’s sentiment. Far too often we get caught up in trying to make Christmas picture perfect and then left disappointed when does’t turn out that way. Let’s face it with kids in the mix things rarely run smoothly! It’s more about finding joy in all moments even when they aren’t perfect.

watched

It was the Infant Nativity yesterday where my littlest girl played Mary. She has talked of nothing else for the past month. She’s endlessly practiced the songs and her lines and I honestly could not have been prouder. And yes, I cried.

I’ve managed to binge watch my way through the most recent Vampire Diaries season on Netflix. Much of it was watched in the middle of the night while keeping eye on a very poorly E. Obviously it was on my Ipad with headphones, she didn’t see any of it.

Are you watching This Is Us on Channel 4 (Tuesdays 9pm) if you aren’t then you are missing a treat. Check it out you won’t be disappointed.

MAde

Technically I didn’t actually build this, my husband did, but I’m taking the credit for putting the books on and reorganising the room around it.

I threw together some mince pies earlier in the week and they went so quickly I made some more!

I love that ready made pastry is dairy free meaning that not only is it quick and easy to ‘make’ the mince pies but N and I can enjoy them too!

wore

I managed to nip into Primark and pick up a few things, including my new favourite cardigan (coatigan?) which I have been living in.

I also managed to grab a pair a black ‘mum’ jeans for £3!

.heard

The XX are back!! I was so excited when I caught their new song on Radio 1 the other day.

I’ve also been loving Billie Marten, a welcome and chilled out break from endless Christmas music

and lastly

We’re off to the New Forest after school today for a long weekend celebrating the in laws 40th wedding anniversary. The girls are super excited to see their cousins,

Feeling festive, baking Gingerbread and having fun at Netflixmas #LittleLoves

This week has had a much slower pace than the previous one, thankfully! I’ve got lots to share and I’m even squeezing in more about my trip to London with Jenny last Thursday and Friday.

  read

I’m slowly reading Me After You and definitely enjoying reading about Lou again. Thanks to the Me Before You film I picture her as Emilia Clark and even hear her voice while reading now! When I’m busy I really enjoy reading a book with a slower, more easy going pace so it’s perfect for me.

I’m still in a bit of a Gilmore Girls haze, I’ve written my thoughts on it here and I loved Chloe’s take on it here –

79 Thoughts I Had On watching Gilmore Girls A Year In The Life – Sorry About The Mess

2aba9e6a7d3f859bb9df96df957c5182

She’s written it in a ‘live blogging’ format so it’s her thoughts as she watches the episodes. Such a clever way of writing about it and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t think of it myself! Obviously don’t read Chloe’s post or mine if you haven’t finished them yet as there are major spoilers.

watched

We’ve cracked open the Christmas films, so to speak! We’ve watched Home Alone (my girls LOVED it and howled with laughter) and Arthur Christmas. We’re going to watch Elf at the weekend, one of my absolute favourites.

I’ve found a binge watch replacement for Gilmore Girls in the new season of Vampire Diaries on Netflix. Elena isn’t in this one but I can’t say I’m missing her. If I’m honest I found her character rather annoying! If you liked Elena and the love story side of Vampire Diaries you might not enjoy it though.

I had the girls on my own over the weekend while the mister was off with friends in Scotland. We had a lovely time at a local craft and vintage fair, you can read all about it here. My two love the magician that is always there, he’s an elderly gentleman and his tricks are the ones I remember seeing as a child. You would think that this tech savvy generation wouldn’t get this kind of entertainment but oh boy you’d be wrong. My girls love him, they howl with laughter at his pantomime style humour and throw themselves into the show.

I’ve found out recently that I suffer from IBS and one of my triggers is too much dairy. In reading into dairy intolerance I light bulb went on as I realised that my eldest girl is likely to be lactose intolerant too. I read the symptoms and ticked them off one by one. As a result we’ve removing dairy from our diet to see if it makes a difference. You don’t realise how much food has milk in until you look, I was so surprised! The girls and I love baking so I’m keen to find dairy free recipes that N and I can enjoy making AND eating.

With that in mind I pulled out my mum’s gingerbread man recipe and gave it a try by subbing the butter for Pure margarine (dairy and gluten free) and to my relief it worked like a dream. In using Pure it makes the whole recipe Vegan friendly too, so that’s a win all round. You can find the recipe here.

It’s a really rich flavour and full of spice, for me it’s like tasting Christmas!

Jenny and I were in London at the end of last week and were determined to fit in a photo walk. Unfortunately thanks to our train being delayed for 3 hours while we were on it it meant we ran out of time, boo. We managed to find a couple of good walls on the walk from our hotel to the tube the next day though. I’m wearing my beloved blanket scarf from H&M, coat from New Look, mum jeans from Primark and breton top from H&M Kids.

A lot of talk at the Netflix Party, technically this was last week but as I wrote my Little Loves post before we went I’m squeezing it into this weeks instead. Jenny and I are both part of the Netflix Stream Team, a group of bloggers working with Netflix – perfect for a Netflix obsessive like myself! Along with hundreds of press we attended Netflixmas in Shoreditch last Thursday night. It was such a fun event

There weren’t many of us Stream Teamers at the event but I did get to meet Karl from The Yorkshire Dad. We bonded over being introverts and I think I talked at him rather a lot about everything he needs to watch on Netflix -Oops! He’s got a great competition going on to win a Chromecast and Netflix voucher so head on over and enter here.

I’ve also re-discovered Fleet Foxes this week, remember them? This track has got me in a particularly festive mood.

We snuggled on the sofa together on Saturday and watched Swallows and Amazons. I loved the original film as a child and I know that the mister read the book so we were both keen to see this version. We all loved it. It was so sweet and reminded me of the family tv that used to be on Sunday nights during the 90s.  It’s so rare to find something all of us enjoy – well, other than Strictly!

It’s been such a busy week for me this week, I feel like I’ve hardly had time to stop. Kirsty’s post is a great reminder that as parents we’re all just doing the best we can. It took a very excited N to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at the weekend, who am I kidding, I was just as excited! It did not disappoint, we were whisked back into Harry Potter’s world only this time it’s the 1920s and in America. If you’re a Potter fan it’s a must see, but I’d say as it’s a 12A it’s comparative to the later Harry Potter films in scariness, so be aware of that when thinking of taking children. N is nine and hid behind her hand a few times!

The mister and I had our date night at the weekend so we went to the cinema and saw Arrival. I had no idea what it was about other than it stars Amy Adams and has aliens in (which made me rather skeptical). It was incredible. The premise is that it’s taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. I was going to share the trailer but I think it actually gives too much away and if you’re going to see it just go in without watching it. It is mind blowing, trust me.

The poorliness in our house is still lingering with N and I being the ones struggling on. E is bouncing off the walls and the mister is back to normal and off on a business trip. Being Human is on Netflix! Did anyone else watch it when it used to be on BBC2? I remember watching an episode and then while up in the night feeding E I would be reading the review of it on The Guardian and read through all the comments analysing it. I know, how obsessive, right? In my defense I hadn’t discovered twitter at that point! Anyway I’ve really been enjoying re-watching them all from the beginning, and I don’t think I’d even watched the first season before so it was good to see the set up of it. For some of you that are wondering what on earth I’m on about the basic premise is a house share with a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf. Stay with me. It’s an indie British show and is full of humour while still being dark. The kind of TV that I think we do really well, oh and did I mention it stars a very hot, Irish Aiden Turner (Poldark) as the vampire?

Have you seen I’ve finally blogged about our bathroom renovation. It’s been sat as a half written draft for months and months and I’m so pleased I’ve finished it and put it up. We still have a few bits to get but I’ll do another post on it when they arrive.

You get a chance to see the hideous tiles we used to have! So pleased I don’t have to look at them anymore.

One week I’ll be more prepared for this section. I need an Instagram Husband as mine is the worst at taking photos. Honestly, whenever I ask him and then look at what he’s taken I always wish I had’t bothered! I need to train up my children pronto.

I recently ordered this Mother Love pin from Mere Soeur and love it, obvs. Everything in Carrie-Anne’s range is just perfect.

heard

On Remembrance Day I listened to this beautiful Radiohead track that’s dedicated to the late Harry Patch who was the last surviving hero from WW1

As for the rest of the week I’ve been listening to Death Cab for Cutie. I love these guys and they were always on my ipod back in the day. I love this track and get so nostalgic when I hear it.

I love how music can transport you back in time, don’t you?

and lastly

N and I are off to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on Saturday and I honestly cannot wait. I don’t know which of us fan girls are more excited!

Here are this week’s #LittleLoves instagram community choices.
