Preparing for Advent with a homemade Advent calendar

Ever since my girls were tiny I’ve loved doing something a little different for Advent. I am not a fan of the [insert cartoon character or band here] chocolate advent calendar as I find them a bit pointless and at the risk of sounding over dramatic.. soulless. So for the past few years I’ve done a homemade Advent calendar.

For our family Christmas is such an important time and the run up to Christmas Day is a time to remember the reason we celebrate so I like to incorporate that into their advent calendar by having activities for them to do each day.

Here’s what I’ve done for the last 3 years..

This one was for Noo as E was still a baby. I put chocolate coins and a little bit of the Nativity story in each parcel

The girls would take it in turns to open an envelope, in each was a chocolate coin or a candy can and a Christmas themed activity idea as well as bit of the Christmas story.

I kept it really simple, again they took it in turns and this time I wrote the activity on a label. Thankfully I saved the labels so I can reuse them.

Unfortunately this calendar is looking a little tired after yet another year of being squished into our attic so I thought I’d go for something else this Advent. We no longer have that fire surround or wallpaper (thank the Lord!) which means I can enjoy having a lovely white canvas of a wall to play around with.

Here’s my (P)inspiration..

So you can see I’m sticking along the same lines.

There’s a parcel to open everyday and I’m still going to have an activity for them to try, check out  my 2013 post for a full list of the activities I include.

And, if time runs out I can always get this Ferm Living one… drools..

I’ll be posting what I’ve made next week so make sure you check back!

Do you do anything special to mark Advent?

Will you be attempting a homemade Advent calendar like me?

Such a lovely idea, I love the little pegs. We are doing something different for advent this year too after just going down the traditional cheap tacky chocolate route before. x

Lovely post, I want to do domethung different this year too. Last year I was so unorganised and was focusing more on the handmade stockings I did for my girls! This year I need to do one for my boy and hopefully do a magical advent too 🙂

I love these ideas sweetpea, and had bookmarked that twiggy Pinterest one to do this year as well! I think we are going to fill our parcels with things to do together as a family. We have already booked a Christmas play and bought a gingerbread house to decorate – I’ve only 22 more days to fill! 🙂 Can’t wait to come back here for some inspiration! Xxx
