Keeping warm on the school run

I’m a bit of a coat and jacket addict and I’m always on the look out for the ‘perfect’ school run coat. It needs to be warm, waterproof and have a decent hood. I’ve got coats that are warm but no hood and waterproof but not warm, I think you get the idea. I thought I’d cracked it last year when I picked up a coat with a removable fur trim to the hood. I thought I was being really clever – I could have the fur on when it was cold and take it off when it rained. Unfortunately when you take the trim off the hood is then too small to cover your head! Fail. I’ve been told by friends that I need to embrace the ‘mum coat’ or ‘teacher coat’, the often brightly coloured waterproof cagole. I’m sure you know the type.

Blacks approached me to try out one of their women’s jackets for my school run mission and this is the one I chose.

The North Face Endeavour Thermoball Jacket

I love the shape of this coat. It’s nipped in at the waist and has a long scoop at the back. Considering it’s so light you wouldn’t expect it to be so warm but thanks to the clever people at The North Face its insulation traps hot air for reduced heat loss and increased warmth. The Lightweight warmth and compressibility of down with the wet-weather insulating performance of synthetic insulation. So in theory I could go for an actual run in this jacket and it would keep me warm (but not too hot) and dry. As you might have guessed I’ve not put that particular aspect to the test yet.. well unless you count legging it to school while dragging to sleepy children along with me!

The only downside is that it has fabric arms, something I didn’t clock when I chose it. So it wouldn’t be ideal in torrential rain but it can cope with a quick down pour.

All in all this jacket is the perfect addition to my school run coat and jacket line up. I’ve been grabbing it and rushing out the door most days since it arrived and I think it will transition well into Spring.

I was sent this jacket for the purpose of this review, all views are my own.

Renovating our small bathroom

We moved into our current house about six years ago and knew that the small family bathroom would need updating and renovating but just didn’t have the budget for it then. We put up with it and saved our pennies in the hope that one day we’d get our dream bathroom. I hated staring at the brown wallpaper and turquoise tiles, they didn’t reflect my taste and I would feel embarrassed when people went in there! It sounds silly really but I desperately wanted to change it and make it feel like ours. Earlier this year we finally got the funds together and starting renovating our small bathroom.

As you can see, it was in desperate need of some love. We may have got rid of the brown wallpaper, but that wasn’t enough to make it look the way I wanted.

I’d spent years dreaming and pinning ideas on Pinterest, I was desperate for a clean bright look and knew that subway tiles would have to feature.

Not only were we getting it re-tiled we also redesigned the whole layout to create more space. Before, we struggled to get more than one person in there at the same time which made bathtime and bedtime with small children very interesting, as you can probably imagine! We ended up turning the bath around and moving both the toilet and the sink. It was a pain but now it’s all done it was so worth it.

We ripped everything out, with the help of friends and then went on holiday while the builders went in and got on with renovating our small bathroom.

This is what we came home to,

A lick of paint and some accessories later and here we have it..

As you can see we’ve kept it simple with white walls and white subway tiles. The floor is tiled with slate tiles and I’ve tied in the grey theme with our towels and accessories.

All we need now is a new blind and a mirror for above the sink. When they’re in, do keep an eye out for my next bathroom post – Styling a Small Bathroom, which will be up very soon.

Styling the perfect guest bedroom

We’re currently looking at moving house, and near the top of my list when we’re house hunting is an extra bedroom so we can have a room that’s permanently set up as a guest bedroom. We live far away from family and have lots of friends scattered around the country so I would love to have a room for them to stay in when they visited rather than them having to sleep on the sofa or on a blow up mattress in my office! I’m always looking at guest bedroom decor inspiration for when I’m ready to get styling the perfect guest bedroom.

I really like a fresh and neutral colour palate and will be leaning towards white and greys. This works well and can be adapted for anyone that comes to stay. I love the clean lines of a Scandi style space and the greys of Nordic styling but also want a luxe feel so lots of throws and texture too.

This room is beautifully laid out, they have really kept the guest in mind with making sure there are towels, spare blankets and even a pair of slippers!

This is beautifully styled bed by The White Company, I love the blankets and co-ordinating cushions. It’s really simple but elegant styling.

I think it’s important to have bedside tables or units if there is the space for them. Perfect for bedside lamps, books and even fresh flowers.

I love being clever with storage and keeping in mind the aesthetics when picking pieces out. This wooden ladder shelf unit is great for towels, toiletries, reading material and even a few little pot plants!

See my Guest Bedroom Pinterest board for more inspiration on styling the perfect guest bedrom

On a practical note, having a dedicated guest room doesn’t have to mean that you’ve got less storage. If you get a larger sized ottoman  bed you can use the bed as storage as well. It’s really handy for things like spare linens, towels and even out of season clothes all in vacuum packed storage bags. You can be clever with storage without having to compromise the style. On the subject of storage make sure that you have somewhere for guests to put their luggage, if there’s space for drawers/a wardrobe make it clear they can utilise them.

When the styling and practicality is down you need to think of what else to add in the room to make your guests as comfortable and looked after as possible. When there’s been a long journey the best thing is being met with a ready made relaxing guest bedroom.

I’ve pored over those Pinterest tutorials on how to be the best host and read those posts listing the essentials your guest room needs (I know, I’m such a goon). It all pays off though, here are some of the ideas I’ve collated for my perfect guest bedroom.

Freshly made bed with guest towels, obviously

Extra blankets and pillows

Scented candles and matches

Bedside lamps

Fresh flowers

Wifi code

Accessible power sockets

Toiletries – a great idea I read somewhere mentioned having a basket of mini samples of things like shampoo, body wash etc.

Things to read, books, magazines, etc

If you’ve got kids staying in the room as well then think about anything else that might be useful, a few toys, or books for example

What have I missed? Can you think of more?

My girls Mini Boden Wishlist for Autumn/Winter

Now that both my girls are at school they definitely don’t need as many clothes. When they were little I’d buy loads of t shirts and playwear so if they wore them to nursery and got messy it didn’t really matter. They had lots in their wardrobes but little of it would be expensive, I couldn’t cope with watching expensive clothes get ruined. When you’re starting out two businesses in one family and have a family to support every penny counts!

With both of them being older now and needing less clothes I’m being more mindful of what clothes we buy and would be more inclined to spend more money on less so that they will last. Like so many I am obsessed with Mini Boden and love that so many of their clothes mix and match. You can put together a capsule wardrobe of lovely prints that will make up lots of outfits, here’s some examples in my girls Mini Boden wishlist for the coming Autumn and Winter.

My girls Mini Boden Wishlist

girls mini boden wishlist aw16

Retro Stripe T-shirt |  Sherpa Lined Anorak

Velour Sweat Pants | Pinafore Skirt |

Glitter High-Tops | Fun Leggings | Raglan T-Shirt

These are the items I’ve got my eye on for my five year old. She loves comfy, fun and colourful clothes and I think these really fit the bill. The jacket will also be perfect for school in those cold winter months. I really love the stripey rainbow prints and I know that they will be an instant hit with E too.

Printed Jumpsuit | Skinny Jeans

Leather Chelsea Boots | Fun Breton

Shirt Dress | Cosy Parka

I like that Mini Boden have combined with the older girls Johnnie B on the Boden website, it makes shopping for my girls at the same time so much easier. N prefers more muted colours and less prints but still likes to have fun with her clothes. She does like to be different to her sister, there’s no matchy matchy outfits going on in our family. With buying from the same store however, I can sneakily get them similar colours and prints so they don’t necessarily match but they do a little.. shh don’t tell them 😉

Pastel Hair Trend – Pink hair don’t care!

Up until last year I had never, ever dyed my hair. The closest thing to dying my hair I came to was using hair mascara in my teens (remember them?!) and that wash in wash out stuff that never really worked! It wasn’t until grey hairs started to appear that I thought the time may have come to embrace the dye so I went whole hog and got my hair dresser to do a bit of ombre too. I’d wanted it for ages but been far too scared! Once I’d done that I’d kind of got the bug. It’s a bit like getting a piercing or tattoo, once you’ve got one you want more! I used to be the same with my hair styles and lengths, I’ve had loads of different ones over the years. Now that I’m happy with the length of my hair I have to do something to stave off the boredom and it looks like colour could be my solution. Only now I’m a bit obsessed with the pastel hair trend.

My main worry was that at 31 I’m a bit old to be playing with colour, especially pastel colours like pink. Wasn’t it all a bit mid-life crisis ish, ok maybe not mid-life but you get what I mean. I’m a 30 something mum, not a teenager, would I be able to pull it off? I think because I’d never done it I felt a bit like it was now or never so I thought F it, why shouldn’t I have pink hair if I want it. I work from home, I’ve got no dress code, it’s the perfect opportunity to give it a try.

I’d been pinning pink ombre or rose gold ombre hair for a few weeks when I dropped it into conversation at the school gate with my hair dresser (and fellow reception mum). I showed her loads of ideas and we decided to go for it!

Rose Gold Hair Inspiration

This was the first time..

pastel hair trend

When that faded quicker than we expected, we added some lighter blonde bits and a darker pink a couple of weeks later. I think I’ll be experimenting with it every time I get it cut, it definitely feels more fun and a lot more ‘me’

I have to admit I’m loving these more daring styles at the moment..

Pastel Hair

Part of me still wishes I had blonde hair – it would make following the pastel trend easier for me!

Hey, who knows what my hair will look like next month..!

Kids colourful bedroom ideas from George at Asda

I haven’t done a home style interiors post for a while and putting this one together has reminded me how much I really miss doing them so I’ll definitely be writing more from now on. I enjoy styling rooms and have had fun over the years with the girls bedrooms. I love splashes of colour, so kids colourful bedrooms are a must in my book!

My five year old and I have put together a moodboard of kids colourful bedroom ideas for her room. My two have switched and chopped and changed bedrooms over the years and in all honesty E has had no say in the way her room currently looks. It’s all things I’ve chosen or her sister chose before she moved into her own room. The basic colour palate is fine, and hey with white walls you can pretty much do anything colour wise. E is a huge colour lover so we’ve kept this in mind while picking out bedroom accessories and furniture from George at Asda.

1. Kids Daisy Beanbag Seat – Yellow // 2. Shopkins bean bag // 3. Seahorse cushion // 4. Pink bean bag chair

5. Seahorse rug // 6. Russian dolls throw // 7. Colour change rabbit light  // 8. Drake desk

9. Mermaid fitted sheet // 10. Webster bed – yellow // 11. Shopkins Cookie cushion // 12. Finley desk chair

As you can see it’s quite an eclectic, colourful mix what with seahorses and Shopkins! We’re not fans of matchy-matchy bedrooms and unlike my children I don’t like to theme their rooms solely on a cartoon character. I know how quickly their tastes change and I’m not prepared to re-decorate on their every whim! However, it’s a great compromise to pick up a few homeware accessories of their current favourite to add in and George at Asda have loads to choose from.
