Giggling at Grace & Frankie, reading blog posts and not baking a cake #LittleLoves

After a busy, but lovely weekend of a birthday party and anniversary celebrations it’s actually been good to have a quieter working week. I’ve even managed to go for a run! When I say run, you’ll have to hold that term very loosely, it was more like a jog-walk. Either way, it’s a start and more than I’ve done in absolutely ages. I’m pleased I’ve eased myself into new routines this month doing a few little changes at a time. Hopefully this will mean more longevity and not ending up in a heap of failure like I do by the end of most Januarys!

Enough about that lets go onto those wonderful little things from this week, grab a cuppa (or a glass, depending on the time of day..!) and have a read.

Red Magazine

I bought myself a subscription to Red Magazine in the Black Friday sale last year and I’m so thankful that I did. I love reading blogs, as you can see from the links below, but I do still adore print. The glossy pages of magazines are just so relaxing and a nice break from a phone or laptop screen.

The Interestings

I’m over half way through The Interestings now but it’s looking unlikely that I’ll finish it this month, so the one book a month is going out the window already. Trust me to pick the longest book for the busiest month! I’m really enjoying it though and there’s no way I’m going to rush it to meet a self imposed deadline.

I was really inspired by these this week –

Oyster & Pearl – What Is Your Something Yellow?

I really enjoyed this post from Lottie. She talks about how after a particularly hard or overwhelming day we all need something comforting. I love the story she shares that’s behind the phrase ‘something yellow’.

Nicola Scoon – Five Reasons to Love Your Small Business

I know how hard it is running your own small business, especially when times are tough and you’re comparing your progress with everyone else’s via social media. This post can even be applied to bloggers, so if you’re a blogger or small business owner then give this a read and bookmark it for future reference.

Old Fashioned Susie – Ten Reasons Why I’ll Always Prefer White Walls

As a long term lover and advocate of white walls I must admit to being swayed recently seeing so many gorgeous rooms with dark painted walls. Thankfully this post has brought me back to why I love white walls, which is lucky really as being in a new build we’re not advised to paint our white walls for at least a year.

Grace and Frankie

Words cannot express just how much I love Grace and Frankie. The only downside to it is that it makes me miss my mum, I just know she would have loved it and giggled away to each episode. If you’ve not come across it yet on Netflix here’s the premise;

‘Jane Fonda (“Grace”) and Lily Tomlin (“Frankie”) star as two women whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when their husbands reveal they are gay and leave them for each other. Both sparring partners and partners-in-crime, they form an unlikely bond to face an uncertain future together and discover a new definition of “family,” with laughter, tears and plenty of mood enhancers along the way.’

Not a rainbow cake

If you follow my IG Stories you’ll have seen that I backed out of making a rainbow cake for my youngest girl’s party. In all honesty I was exhausted. I had been run off my feet all week with jobs and picking up the slack while my husband had been ill. I thought about feeling guilty but then so many people came to my rescue to tell me that Asda sell ready made rainbow cakes! I raced down there on Saturday before the party and found one, so all was not lost! Sure, mine would have tasted better…. *cough* but this one did the trick.

LoneWolf Gin

lonewolf gin

I have however made myself a couple of gin and tonics this week with my new bottle of LoneWolf Gin bought for me as an anniversary gift. It’s fast becoming my favourite!

Black clothes!

I wrote earlier this week about my desire to have a more minimal wardrobe. I don’t think I’d go as far as having a capsule wardrobe, as I just don’t think that’s attainable or realistic for me at the moment. However, I do want to be more intentional with my purchases and have a good old clear out! Have a read here if you’d like, My Simple Style.

Make up

I finally seem to have found a set of make up products that work and that I love. A mixture of Benefit, Maybelline and a couple of other brands. This is my daily-ish make up, it takes me about ten minutes in the morning, and like my clothes I do like to keep it simple. I’ve been wondering whether to share my make up routine, would that be something you’d be interested in? Let me know.

First Aid Kit – Fireworks

The sisters are back with a gorgeous new album. They’re on tour in the UK soon, I really must get tickets!

Blogtacular – Influencer Controversies

You’d have to have been living under a rock to have not seen anything about the recent blogger/brand hoo-haa between an influencer and a hotel. Kat does a great job of navigating this and gives such good insight into it. I found myself nodding along and wish I could make everyone listen to it!

What She Said – The Power of Creative Coaching with Jen Carrington

Most of you know by now how much of a fan girl I am of coach Jen Carrington, so when I read that Lucy would be interviewing her in this weeks podcast I listened straight away. Jen talks so much sense and I relate to so much of what she shares. If you’ve not heard of Jen and you’re a blogger/freelancer/creative business owner then this podcast is a great introducer.

One Girl Band – Belinda Love Lee // Heart over Hustle

Yet another podcast I’ve listened to this week that I found myself nodding along to and wishing I could make notes (I was driving at the time!). I’d not come across Belinda before but after just a few minutes I ended up following her on most platforms. I’m a huge advocate of heart over hustle and hate the glorification of busy that we seem to have going on in our culture at the moment.

and lastly

We’ve got a slow weekend ahead of us and I am so happy, especially after all the illness and busy time of it we had last week. January is one of our busiest months and this is the first weekend of the year so far that we’ve had no set plans.

Have a fantastic weekend!

I’ve been wondering whether to subscribe to red again as I’ve gone back to buying it each month it makes sense, I always seem to love the articles. Loving the idea of a capsule wardrobe, maybe that’s another thing along the decluttering and simplifying that should be bought into play here! I haven’t tried lone wolf before, will stick that on my next try list x

  • Angela Webster - January 26, 2018 reply

I do love a good magazine, you can’t beat the smell of those glossy pages. Thanks for the podcast suggestions I’m always looking for new ones to add to my list. having a simplified make-up and clothing routine saves so much time and stress doesn’t it. Have a lovely relaxing weekend x

  • Suzanne - January 26, 2018 reply

Ooh lots of podcasts and blog posts for me to devour this week! I really like the sound of Grace & Frankie, I shall go and hunt it down on Netflix. I also have those same eyeshadow palettes – affordable and they do the job! My girls are obsessed with Urban Decay but I can’t justify spending that amount on eye shadow. Aren’t they all the same anyway?! Have a lovely weekend. I’m with you on crawling into a cardboard box and closing the door but sadly the husband is away again so I’ll be doing all of the taxi rides 🙁

Gracie and Frankie looks so good. I wish there were extra hours in the day just for TV. I feel like I’m missing everything.

  • Joanna Bayford - January 26, 2018 reply

I need to start listening to podcasts I wish I had more free time to do so. I really fo need to plan my days better. I’ve not read a copy of Red magazine in a long time I’ll have to grab a copy at some point.

Grace and Frankie keeps popping up on my Netflix to watch. Once I have finished Suits I will have to give it a go. I am loving Revolution make-up at the moment. I have the 2018 eye pallet which has 48 colours and its so lovely. Have a wonderful weekend xx

  • Clémentine - January 26, 2018 reply

OMG! Grace & Frankie are back! I haven’t had a chance to turn Netflix on this week so I missed the news! I’m excited for the weekend, I love that show so much! Your pleated skirt looks lovely, I would love to insert one into my everyday wardrobe! Also, I’ll be opening my new bottle of Churchill gin tonight to celebrate the end of the week so, cheers! Have a fantastic weekend, xx

I listened to the blogtacular podcast this morning. I’m behind with all my podcasts! Love the sound of the post about white walls. I love them too. It’s hard when someone is ill. I think you made the right decision about the cake but as a mum who likes to bake, I know it can take some persuasion to change. #littleloves

Ooh I need to listen to the podcast from Kat. Must remember. I think you have to follow the style that makes you smile, I can be so guilty of buying for the seasons, this year I want to add more capsule type clothing. Mr H would say I don’t need any! Love the backdrop you have taken your make up on x

  • Stacie - January 26, 2018 reply

I love a magazine, but hate that they are quite pricey! I’ve also been loving podcasts this week, having listened to ‘What She Said’ myself this week, I agree that Jen makes so much sense in what she says. I saw the trailer for Grace & Frankie the other day and thought it looked hilarious, I love Jane Fonda! Enjoy your quiet weekend xx

  • Mum Reinvented - January 26, 2018 reply

I may have a slight magazine addiction, not that I get much time to read them anymore. Love all those blog and podcast recommendations. And I adore Grace & Frankie. I’ve been watching it this week and it had me in stitches. Enjoy your chilled weekend x

  • RachelSwirl - January 26, 2018 reply

I wear an awful lot of black clothing I must cut down and get my colour into my wardrobe. As for the makeup situation, I really need to get mine into order.

  • Jenny - January 27, 2018 reply

I haven’t read a magazine forever but I used to buy every one each week and pouring over them. I might have to scoop one up and treat myself. Loved your simplifying wardrobe post. I need to do that but I just am a hoarder and can’t throw anything away. I have three sizes in my wardrobe just in case I gain or lose weight I really shouldn’t do that. hahahah Hope you have a great weekend ahead. #littleloves

  • Sonia - January 27, 2018 reply

Oh I love Grace and Frankie too! I hope I am just like them when I am that age! As soon as I have finished watching Friends I’ll be watching season 4 🙂 I love your makeup selection! I really need to sort my make up drawer out. Love the look of that gin!! Have a great weekend xx

  • Shell Louise - January 27, 2018 reply

We’re having a slow weekend as well; it’s bliss!

  • Chloe: Picture Taker Memory Maker - January 28, 2018 reply

I’m loving my magazine subscription at the moment too – the husband has bought me a subscription to The Simple Things magazine for the last couple of years and it’s just the loveliest magazine. I’ve not come across Grace and Frankie before – might have to check it out.

  • Lauren Woodward - January 28, 2018 reply

Definitely going to check out that post by Oyster and Pearl.
I love that Hoola bronzer. I only have a sample from one of the beauty subscription boxes but will definitely be buying one when I’ve gone through that xx

  • Kara - January 28, 2018 reply

What a fab week, I too need to sort my wardrobe out. I just can’t even find staples that work for me.

I have finished the 4th season of Grace and Frankie and I am gutted, I already miss it.

Yes to seeing your make up routine xxx

  • Janet Yarwood - January 28, 2018 reply

I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe. My clothes need a huge sort out so maybe now is the time!

  • Sarah | Boo Roo and Tigger Too - January 28, 2018 reply

My capsule wardrobe consists of various shades of Joules Harbour tops, so comfortable and easy to wear.

  • Sarah | Digital Motherhood - January 29, 2018 reply

Have heard good things about Grace & Frankie, will have to give it a watch! #LittleLoves

  • Sarah Christie - January 29, 2018 reply

I keep threatening to make a rainbow cake too! And I love Benefit Hoola its fab. I hardly ever wear black I have so little of it in my wardrobe but it would be great to have a more streamline wardrobe x

  • Stacey - Mums Blind Love - February 1, 2018 reply

love the sound of Grace and Frankie we have been looking for a new series to watch on Netflix. The revolution pallets are fab and so affordable.

  • Mudpie Fridays - February 2, 2018 reply

Thank you for the recommendations on the pod casts. I am trying to build up a list for the car so will be adding these. I am also trying to clear out the wardrobe. I have been kidding myself its all about my shape changing post kids. But I think its probably more to do with the fact I am just growing up a bit. Hope you had a nice relaxing week xx #LittleLoves

  • Heledd - Running in Lavender - February 7, 2018 reply

I’ve just recently started watching Grace and Frankie and like you I’m a little obsessed. One paper it would not be my thing but beautifully done… and those houses!! Anyway, it’s lovely and so funny, I just love it. Also, love a bit of Hoola bronzer ; ) xxx
