After a busy, but lovely weekend of a birthday party and anniversary celebrations it’s actually been good to have a quieter working week. I’ve even managed to go for a run! When I say run, you’ll have to hold that term very loosely, it was more like a jog-walk. Either way, it’s a start and more than I’ve done in absolutely ages. I’m pleased I’ve eased myself into new routines this month doing a few little changes at a time. Hopefully this will mean more longevity and not ending up in a heap of failure like I do by the end of most Januarys!
Enough about that lets go onto those wonderful little things from this week, grab a cuppa (or a glass, depending on the time of day..!) and have a read.
I bought myself a subscription to Red Magazine in the Black Friday sale last year and I’m so thankful that I did. I love reading blogs, as you can see from the links below, but I do still adore print. The glossy pages of magazines are just so relaxing and a nice break from a phone or laptop screen.
I’m over half way through The Interestings now but it’s looking unlikely that I’ll finish it this month, so the one book a month is going out the window already. Trust me to pick the longest book for the busiest month! I’m really enjoying it though and there’s no way I’m going to rush it to meet a self imposed deadline.
I was really inspired by these this week –
I really enjoyed this post from Lottie. She talks about how after a particularly hard or overwhelming day we all need something comforting. I love the story she shares that’s behind the phrase ‘something yellow’.
I know how hard it is running your own small business, especially when times are tough and you’re comparing your progress with everyone else’s via social media. This post can even be applied to bloggers, so if you’re a blogger or small business owner then give this a read and bookmark it for future reference.
As a long term lover and advocate of white walls I must admit to being swayed recently seeing so many gorgeous rooms with dark painted walls. Thankfully this post has brought me back to why I love white walls, which is lucky really as being in a new build we’re not advised to paint our white walls for at least a year.
Grace and Frankie
Words cannot express just how much I love Grace and Frankie. The only downside to it is that it makes me miss my mum, I just know she would have loved it and giggled away to each episode. If you’ve not come across it yet on Netflix here’s the premise;
‘Jane Fonda (“Grace”) and Lily Tomlin (“Frankie”) star as two women whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when their husbands reveal they are gay and leave them for each other. Both sparring partners and partners-in-crime, they form an unlikely bond to face an uncertain future together and discover a new definition of “family,” with laughter, tears and plenty of mood enhancers along the way.’
Not a rainbow cake
If you follow my IG Stories you’ll have seen that I backed out of making a rainbow cake for my youngest girl’s party. In all honesty I was exhausted. I had been run off my feet all week with jobs and picking up the slack while my husband had been ill. I thought about feeling guilty but then so many people came to my rescue to tell me that Asda sell ready made rainbow cakes! I raced down there on Saturday before the party and found one, so all was not lost! Sure, mine would have tasted better…. *cough* but this one did the trick.
I have however made myself a couple of gin and tonics this week with my new bottle of LoneWolf Gin bought for me as an anniversary gift. It’s fast becoming my favourite!
I wrote earlier this week about my desire to have a more minimal wardrobe. I don’t think I’d go as far as having a capsule wardrobe, as I just don’t think that’s attainable or realistic for me at the moment. However, I do want to be more intentional with my purchases and have a good old clear out! Have a read here if you’d like, My Simple Style.
I finally seem to have found a set of make up products that work and that I love. A mixture of Benefit, Maybelline and a couple of other brands. This is my daily-ish make up, it takes me about ten minutes in the morning, and like my clothes I do like to keep it simple. I’ve been wondering whether to share my make up routine, would that be something you’d be interested in? Let me know.
First Aid Kit – Fireworks
The sisters are back with a gorgeous new album. They’re on tour in the UK soon, I really must get tickets!
You’d have to have been living under a rock to have not seen anything about the recent blogger/brand hoo-haa between an influencer and a hotel. Kat does a great job of navigating this and gives such good insight into it. I found myself nodding along and wish I could make everyone listen to it!
Most of you know by now how much of a fan girl I am of coach Jen Carrington, so when I read that Lucy would be interviewing her in this weeks podcast I listened straight away. Jen talks so much sense and I relate to so much of what she shares. If you’ve not heard of Jen and you’re a blogger/freelancer/creative business owner then this podcast is a great introducer.
One Girl Band – Belinda Love Lee // Heart over Hustle
Yet another podcast I’ve listened to this week that I found myself nodding along to and wishing I could make notes (I was driving at the time!). I’d not come across Belinda before but after just a few minutes I ended up following her on most platforms. I’m a huge advocate of heart over hustle and hate the glorification of busy that we seem to have going on in our culture at the moment.
We’ve got a slow weekend ahead of us and I am so happy, especially after all the illness and busy time of it we had last week. January is one of our busiest months and this is the first weekend of the year so far that we’ve had no set plans.
Have a fantastic weekend!
